More than 500 people gathered this Tuesday at Fra Bernadí Square in Manlleu to offer their condolences to the families of five teenagers who died in a storage room fire.

The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, joined Mayor Arnau Rovira in leading the tribute. The local council has declared three days of official mourning. The victims, aged between 14 and 17, were students at local high schools Antoni Pous and Institut del Ter. Two other girls managed to escape the flames with minor injuries.
The Mossos d'Esquadra police force is investigating the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest the youths were inhaling laughing gas from a canister when a leak ignited. Firefighters found the bodies after extinguishing the blaze in the rooftop storage unit on Montseny Street, which the group used as a private meeting spot.
