The company Embutidos Monells, based in Sant Miquel de Balenyà, produces 45% of the bacon sold in Spain, creating an economic powerhouse that challenges the infrastructure of this small Osona community.

Owned by the Chinese WH Group, Monells has seen massive growth over the last decade. However, this success has not been matched by urban planning. Many of its workers, 55% of whom are immigrants, face severe housing difficulties, often living in dilapidated buildings near the industrial estate and crossing railway tracks daily due to a lack of proper pedestrian crossings.

"We cannot find Catalan people who want to work in the factories. 90% of new hires are immigrants."

Maria Àngels Sebastià · General Manager of Monells
Local residents complain about the 80 heavy trucks that pass through narrow streets every day. While the company has offered to fund a new bypass to improve logistics and quality of life, the project remains stalled awaiting approval from the Ministry of Transport, leaving the village in a state of industrial tension.
