The Baix Pallars Town Council has formalized a proposal to integrate 2,380.18 hectares of its municipal area into the Alt Pirineu Natural Park (PNAP), which would make it Catalonia's largest natural park.

This initiative, which already has the favorable agreement of the municipal plenary and the approval of the PNAP Governing Board, aims to consolidate this natural space and expand it to 81,697 hectares.
The technical report highlights the strategic value of the proposed area as an ecological connector between the high mountains of Pallars Sobirà and the pre-Pyrenean ranges of Alt Urgell. Its incorporation will strengthen the park's north-south continuity and protect a wide diversity of ecosystems, from Mediterranean forests to high mountain meadows.
Almost 80% of the proposed area contains Habitats of Community Interest, including holm oak forests, kermes oak scrublands, dry evergreen scrub, semi-natural grasslands, and riparian forests. The area also shelters emblematic and protected species such as the capercaillie, black vulture, freshwater crayfish, and lammergeier.
Beyond biodiversity conservation, the proposal focuses on local development. It is argued that integration into the Natural Park can boost extensive livestock farming, sustainable tourism, create economic opportunities, and help retain population. The conservation of the municipality's cultural and landscape heritage is also planned, including the Gerri de la Sal Salt Flats and traditional Pyrenean architecture.
This expansion positions Baix Pallars as a key element in the ecological connectivity of the Catalan Pyrenees and consolidates the Alt Pirineu Natural Park as a leading conservation area in Europe.
