The Alt Pirineu Natural Park is promoting the European project Pyrfer+, which seeks to preserve the historical heritage of iron exploitation and forging, while fostering the training of new blacksmiths in the Pyrenean region.

This initiative, presented on April 13, 2026, in La Seu d'Urgell, will run until 2028 and aims to halt the disappearance of a traditional craft, especially in rural areas. The project involves several Catalan regions, including Alt Urgell and Pallars Sobirà, as well as other cross-border territories.

"The project will allow us to expand the training offer related to iron forging and participate in events such as the one held every summer within the framework of the Pyrenean Iron Fair of Vall Ferrera, in Alins (Pallars Sobirà)."

Marc Garriga · Director of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park
Among the planned actions, the creation of a technological center dedicated to metallurgy in Campdevànol (Ripollès) and a forging school in Arles, in Catalunya Nord, stands out. Furthermore, the program envisages the dissemination of iron exploitation heritage in areas such as the Virós forest, in Pallars Sobirà, where the first Catalan forges, dating from the Roman-Visigothic era, are located.
The project's funding comes 65% from Interreg Poctefa funds. The first meeting of the program was attended by representatives from municipalities on both sides of the border with France, highlighting the cross-border nature of the initiative. La Seu d'Urgell will be a key location for future meetings.
