The withdrawal of the vehicles, about twenty tractors, began mid-morning on Saturday, and the road is expected to fully reopen to traffic within a few hours. The demonstrators plan to move to other protest points, such as Tarragona, where blockades will continue over the weekend.
The spokesperson for the Gremi de la Pagesia Catalana (Catalan Farming Guild), Mar Ariza, regretted that the Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, has not yet commented on the proposal to accompany the sector to Madrid to defend the 'no' to the Mercosur pact, a position already expressed by the Parliament of Catalonia.
“"It shouldn't be that complicated; he has to be the representative, he has to be the voice of livestock farming and agriculture in Catalonia, and he is not doing it."
Meanwhile, the president of ASAJA, Pere Roqué, explained that the organization has contacted various political parties to try and block the ratification of the agreement in the European Parliament by speaking directly with MEPs. Roqué also noted that maintaining the CAP budget has provided “a bit of a solution” for the sector.
Cleaning crews were dispatched to the Fondarella area to remove the remains of the bonfires made by the farmers during the concentration before the total reopening of the A-2 highway.
