Several towns in northern Priorat have once again lost Internet and mobile phone access for four days, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of the area's aerial infrastructure.

Municipalities including Margalef, Ulldemolins, and Poboleda were disconnected from Friday evening until Tuesday. Local authorities state that these incidents are no longer isolated, following similar outages in December and during the Epiphany holidays in January.

"When it is not the wind, it is the water, but since the fiber optic network is aerial, every time a pine tree falls or it rains, the cable breaks."

Àlex Vilà · Mayor of Margalef
The Mayor of Margalef, Àlex Vilà, argues that companies refuse to use the Generalitat de Catalunya underground network because it is not profitable due to the low number of subscribers. Local councils are seeking meetings with the regional government to ensure digital rights are protected in rural areas to prevent further depopulation.
