Priorat mobilizes against MAT and criticizes PLATER for imposing a 'Pharaonic' energy model

Over 150 residents gathered in Falset to learn details about the super high-voltage project and the Generalitat's renewable energy proposal.

Over 150 residents and representatives from the Consell Comarcal del Priorat gathered Thursday at the Absis del Castell de Falset to express their firm opposition to the Very High Voltage Line (MAT) and the Generalitat's PLATER plan.

The meeting, organized by the Consell Comarcal and the Prioritat association, served to detail the impact of the Escatrón–els Aubals–la Secuita line, which directly affects the municipalities of Masroig, Bellmunt del Priorat, Falset, and Pradell de la Teixeta. The OCTE technician, Sergi Saladié, described the project as "Pharaonic."

"What this project does is sacrifice our region again to bring energy to consumption centers, and we are not very clear about the purposes either."

Sergi Méndez · President of the Consell Comarcal del Priorat
Saladié explained that the repowering of the current line involves running two cables (220 kV and 400 kV) through the same tower, creating a 620 kV line. This means the towers will increase from an average of 26 meters to approximately 50 meters in height, with more arms, drastically increasing the visual and territorial impact. He also stressed that the infrastructure contradicts the 2017 Climate Change Law, which promotes a distributed energy model.
Regarding the PLATER, it was denounced that the Generalitat's proposal ignores the Comarcal Plan developed by Priorat, the only region in Catalonia that has submitted its own planning. The regional plan foresees 60 MW of wind energy, while the PLATER demands 560 MW, equivalent to installing between 100 and 125 turbines 200 meters high, a figure Saladié considers "impossible" without major destruction.
The Consell Comarcal is preparing allegations to submit to both the Spanish Government (until February 25) and the Generalitat de Catalunya (until February 26). President Sergi Méndez called on citizens, whether directly affected or not, to actively participate in submitting allegations to strengthen opposition to the project.
