The refueling of the plant, which has begun its 28th operating cycle, required the temporary incorporation of a thousand workers from different professional profiles, more than half of whom were residents near the plant. The plant synchronized to the electrical grid on Wednesday at 10:20 PM.
During the shutdown, ANAV renewed 60 of the 157 elements in the reactor core. Furthermore, many preparatory activities have been undertaken for the plant's entry into long-term operation, once it reaches 40 years of service in December 2027.
Overall, the shutdown was used to execute nearly 9,000 work orders and incorporate 25 design modifications related to various plant systems. A large number of inspections were carried out on the primary circuit, including volumetric and eddy current inspection of the instrumentation penetrations at the bottom of the reactor vessel.
Among the notable maintenance tasks, cleaning of the three steam generators was performed using the 'sludge lancing' technique, along with changing gaskets on steam generator A, replacing the motor of reactor coolant pump B, and replacing the three pressurizer safety valves.
The next scheduled shutdown for ANAV will take place in the spring of 2026, when unit 1 of the Ascó Nuclear Power Plant will undertake its 31st fuel refueling.
