The situation, which began in February during a period of intense rainfall, persists in the town of La Segarra. Residents of affected homes have had to install hoses to continuously pump water from cellars and garages into the sewage system, to prevent accumulation.
The Sant Guim de la Plana City Council attributes this phenomenon to the emergence of water from the aquifer beneath the town, which is believed to have become saturated after a winter with exceptional precipitation.
“"natural phenomenon due to the abnormal and extraordinary rainfall of recent months"
The mayor, Josep Llobet, explained that the town sits on a significant aquifer that, during periods of continuous rainfall, tends to saturate, causing water to emerge to the surface. Although this has happened before, it has never lasted for such an extended period.
To determine the exact origin of the problem, the council has requested a geological study from the Catalan Water Agency. An indicator of this situation is the Madern artesian well, located in Vicfred, an aggregated nucleus of Sant Guim de la Plana, which normally fills for only a few days but has been overflowing for two months on this occasion.
