The exhibition, titled The Body as Territory, opened in early April and will be on display until June 28. The show connects rocky matter with the identity of Segarra, emphasizing the strength of women, especially in rural settings.
The project began two years ago, aiming to equate the female body with its environment, focusing on the Segarra region. The large-volume works combine bronze and various types of stone, such as sandstones, limestones, or marbles, mostly sourced from nearby quarries like those in Vinaixa and Verdú.
“"For me, working with local stone is easier, as, unlike others that might be more colorful, it does not contain toxic materials. Furthermore, doing so also carries the symbolism of being able to shape the territory with the territory itself."
The creative process included extensive research into materials to generate visual and luminous contrasts. The roughness and imperfection of the stone play a crucial role, combining polished parts with others left natural, in contrast to the different types of bronze applied. This "battle of textures" is enriched by the introduction of gold leaf in some pieces, a brilliant element that enhances the feminine role of the figure.
The sculptures, with abstract and less figurative forms, seek to convey an inner strength, symbolizing the solidity and resistance that unite stone, women, and the Segarra landscape. The exhibition can be visited on weekends and holidays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
