Straw, often considered agricultural waste, is emerging as a sustainable construction alternative in Segarra. This is the central premise of the Caseta de Palla project, an initiative that offers training in bioconstruction and promotes the use of this material for walls and insulation.
The project's proponent emphasizes the importance of disseminating knowledge about applying local and natural materials in construction. The goal is to break with the perception that only industrial and standardized solutions are viable, opening the door to more environmentally friendly practices.
“"With 10% of all the cereal produced in Spain, we could cover all the homes built and renovated in a year."
In addition to its potential as an abundant resource, especially in Segarra, straw stands out for its thermal insulation properties. This allows for the design of houses that, with good planning, can do without heating or air conditioning systems, even in climates like that of Lleida.
Although current European regulations already address material decarbonization, the sector laments the lack of bureaucratic facilities for using elements such as clay, wood, or straw. This administrative difficulty contrasts with the growing interest in bioconstruction training, which attracts both industry professionals and individuals without prior experience.
