The Catalan Government has commissioned Ifercat to update the technical studies for the Transversal Railway Axis (EFT), a 250-kilometer corridor connecting Lleida and Girona through the region's interior.

The project aims to move away from the current radial model centered on Barcelona. The planned infrastructure will support passenger trains traveling at 250 km/h and freight trains at 150 km/h, serving towns such as Cervera, Igualada, and Martorell.

"We want to replicate in the railway sector what the transversal road axis meant for Catalonia in its time."

The 5.5 million euro study will take 18 months to complete. This initiative comes as the Rodalies commuter system faces ongoing stability issues following the January 20 accident in Gelida, with Adif already spending 110 million euros on urgent repairs.
