The incident occurred around 7:15 AM, shortly after the bus, carrying 55 passengers, departed from the Lleida station. The vehicle lost control and collided with a building at number 11 Rambla Ferran, which houses the Provincial Council of Lleida (Diputació de Lleida). Eleven units from the Firefighters and the SEM (Emergency Medical System), along with a medicalized helicopter and a team of psychologists, were dispatched to the scene.
According to José Ramón Ropero, territorial head of the Emergency Medical System (SEM), out of the 46 injured, four are in critical condition, nine are seriously injured, and 33 have minor injuries. The SEM established a medical area at the scene for triage. Thirteen of the injured were transported to the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital and the CUAP Prat de la Riba. Ropero noted that the most seriously injured are already undergoing surgery.
The mayor of Lleida, Fèlix Larrosa, thanked the residents and business owners of the avenue for their immediate assistance. He described the event as the city's most serious accident and confirmed that police forces have launched an investigation to determine the causes. Larrosa explained that the driver, who is in a state of shock, lost control of the vehicle on a straight stretch and suddenly turned right.
Larrosa detailed that the driver was a novice and was accompanied by a more experienced driver, who is among the most seriously injured, suffering a partial leg amputation. The mayor expressed relief that there were no fatalities and pointed out that the accident could have been worse had it occurred an hour later when the avenue would have been more crowded. Most of the injured were seasonal workers traveling on the bus, although he admitted that people on the avenue were narrowly missed.
