Lleida commemorates Holocaust victims and announces five new Stolpersteine plaques

The solemn ceremony, held in front of the FITA sculpture, served to remember the deportees and reaffirm the city's commitment to peace and human rights.

The Lleida City Council (La Paeria) held a solemn ceremony this Sunday, January 25, in front of the FITA sculpture to commemorate the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, announcing the installation of five new Stolpersteine cobblestones.

The Deputy Mayor, Cristina Morón, was responsible for announcing the placement of the five new cobblestones in memory of deportees who had lived in Lleida. The names to be added to the memorial are Antoni Mir Jové, Sabino Vallejo San Pedro, Ramon Vidal Tomàs, Carmel Chacó Palau, and León Luengo Muñoz.

The Councillor for Civil Rights, Roberto Pino, stressed the importance of this commemoration to “reaffirm Lleida's commitment to peace and human rights”. The event included musical pieces and poetry performed by mezzo-soprano Maria Altadill, rhapsode Núria Miret, and pianist David Pradas.

The ceremony, which took place in front of the FITA sculpture by artist Àngel Eroles, concluded with a floral offering and a minute of silence. Students from the DEMD Working Group on Historical Memory of the Generalitat also participated. Additionally, the “Uniting Generations” event is scheduled for Monday, January 26, at La Llotja, involving about 500 students from Lleida.
