The area dedicated to organic farming in the province of Lleida grew by 2.05% last year, reaching 139,281 hectares and consolidating its position as a driving force in Catalonia's organic sector.

This figure represents almost half of the registered organic agricultural production in Catalonia, which in 2025 totaled 287,266 hectares, with an overall increase of 1.19%. The data, recently published by the Generalitat, shows a recovery after a slight setback in 2024.
Excluding land used for fodder and pastures, which constitute 80% of the organic hectares in the region, the crops with the largest organic extension are olive groves (5,201 hectares), vineyards (3,282 hectares), and cereals (2,664 hectares). Organic vineyards have experienced remarkable growth over the past 15 years, increasing from just 200 hectares to the current figure.
Regarding livestock, organic farming activities increased by 1.03% in 2025, with 492 registered farms. The bovine sector is the most representative, accounting for 61.8% of the operations. Despite the increase in area and farms, Lleida has lost more than thirty operators, standing at 1,108 compared to 1,143 at the end of 2024.
The Government's goal is for 50% of Catalonia's food production to be organic in the coming years. To promote this transition, the Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, announced the hiring of 73 new facilitators and advisors, more than double the current number. In addition to supporting producers, Ordeig emphasized the need to change consumer mentality, encouraging them not to base their purchasing decisions solely on price. He also acknowledged that agreements such as Mercosur are beyond regional control but assured that every effort would be made to promote organic products, including demanding stricter controls.
