Over a hundred residents in Lleida gathered this February 10 to voice their strong opposition to a municipal social housing project located on Acadèmia street.

The meeting, organized by the neighborhood council of Instituts-Sant Ignasi and Templers-Escorxador, was attended by approximately 120 people. The community is protesting the Lleida City Council's plan to house 25 homeless individuals in the historic Josefines convent.

"The residential space will be for people in the process of gaining autonomy, not for the chronically homeless."

Neighborhood representative Miquel Barniol argued that the area already hosts many social entities and suggested the building should instead house a primary care center (CAP) or a nursing home. Residents expressed fears that the facility could lead to constant conflict and urban degradation.
Opposition leader Xavi Palau called for the project to be halted to allow for further public consultation, while local religious representatives from Santa Maria de Gardeny appealed for community solidarity.
