The city of Lleida experienced an intense weekend with the 45th edition of the Aplec del Caragol, its premier gastronomic festival. The event broke records for both participation, with an estimated 200,000 people including participants and visitors, and for temperatures, exceeding 35 degrees Celsius on Friday, the hottest day of the year up to that point. This unusual summer heat was a common topic among attendees, who constantly sought shade.
The large turnout caused communication disruptions. According to Ferran Perdrix, president of the Federació de Colles, from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, the mobile phone antennas in the Camps Elisis area became overloaded due to the high volume of usage, leading to service outages for several hours. Despite this inconvenience, the weather did not dampen the participants' enthusiasm.
Sunday's events culminated in the traditional parade through the city center, featuring 124 groups, three more than the previous year. Perdrix described the parade as "spectacular" and "one of the most participatory in years," forming an unprecedented "snake of color." The festival was marked by a "great spirit of coexistence" and a reduction in incidents compared to previous editions.
The on-site field hospital treated 120 people, primarily for minor cuts, burns, allergies, and mosquito bites, a significantly lower figure than last year. Only three individuals required transfer to the Arnau Hospital in Lleida for sprains, none of them serious.
Regarding mobility, areas for improvement were noted, such as the insufficient number of taxis in the city, with waits sometimes reaching 30 to 40 minutes. There were also complaints that the free night buses introduced last year were now paid services. Hotels reported being fully booked, and a notable number of tourist apartments were available at high prices.
