The Complex Chronic and Palliative Pediatric Patient Unit at the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Lleida is currently providing specialized care to forty children and adolescents.

Established in 2018 and led by pediatrician Xavier Bringué, the multidisciplinary team focuses on patients with severe neurological or rare diseases. The unit's primary goal is to manage physical symptoms and provide emotional support to families facing life-limiting conditions from the prenatal stage through adolescence.

"These are children and adolescents suffering from a disease without a curative option, and we try to improve their quality of life."

A key aspect of the service is home-based care, which significantly reduces the need for families to travel to Barcelona for specialist follow-ups. This approach has proven effective in decreasing emergency hospital admissions and allowing medical procedures, such as blood tests, to be conducted in a familiar environment.
Galdina Valls, from the Catalan Health Service, emphasized the ongoing efforts to strengthen this network. She noted that while more resources are needed, finding professionals with the specific vocation and personal resilience required for palliative care remains a significant challenge in the field.
