The Cadí tunnel, a key route to Cerdanya, was closed to traffic for an hour and a half this Wednesday afternoon due to a protest by a group of teachers. The disruption occurred between 6:30 PM and 8:20 PM, affecting the C-16 in Riu de Cerdanya in both directions.
This action follows a week of strikes in the education sector and comes a day after an unsuccessful meeting between education unions and the Department of Education. Before the tunnel closure, about a hundred teachers blocked the N-240 in Lleida, burning chairs and desks as a symbol of their discontent.
The protests have spread across several regions, including Ponent, Alt Pirineu, and Aran. According to the Department of Education, strike participation was 18%, while unions estimate it at 60%. Demonstrations in Lleida and La Seu d'Urgell called for "more salary, fewer ratios, more resources, less bureaucracy, and more democracy."
In Lleida, the demonstration began in front of the Territorial Services of Education, with moments of tension, and included a stop at the PSC headquarters. Police reported approximately two thousand participants, while organizers claimed four thousand. Slow marches and road blockades also occurred in La Seu d'Urgell and Alta Ribagorça.
