Unemployment falls in Catalonia, record affiliation with 50,000 new jobs

Unemployment in Catalonia continued its downward trend in May, closing with 307,627 registered individuals, the lowest figure in 18 years. This reduction is accompanied by record affiliation numbers, with over 50,000 new jobs created.

May concluded with 307,627 unemployed people in Catalonia, marking the lowest figure in 18 years. This represents a decrease of 6,900 people compared to April, a 2.19% reduction. Although unemployment has decreased across all sectors, the services sector has led job creation, with 5,546 new hires.
The downward trend in unemployment has been observed in all four Catalan provinces. Lleida leads the reduction compared to the previous month, while Girona leads the year-on-year decrease. Compared to a year ago, unemployment has fallen by nearly 12,000 people, a 3.72% drop.
The reduction in joblessness has affected both men and women, with a particularly sharp decrease among young people under 25 (-6.5%). At the national level, the situation is similar, with 36,323 fewer unemployed in May (-1.54%), bringing the total to 2,320,721 people, the lowest level since 2007.
In Spain, unemployment has decreased in all economic sectors compared to April, with services (-1.74%), industry, and construction standing out. Agriculture shows the largest percentage drop (-2.26%). Andalusia leads the regional unemployment reduction (-9,125), followed by Catalonia (-6,900) and the Community of Madrid (-3,834).
Female unemployment has fallen by 20,316 people (1,404,110 in total), the lowest figure for a May since 2008. Male unemployment has decreased by 16,007 people (916,611 in total). Among young people under 25, the reduction was 4,738 people (-2.79%), marking the first time it has fallen below 165,000 in May.
This improvement in unemployment is reflected in an increase in employment, with record figures. Spain has surpassed 22.3 million affiliated workers, while Catalonia has created over 50,000 jobs, exceeding 3.97 million affiliations.
Nationally, 1,323,719 contracts were signed in May, of which 43% (572,061) were permanent. Permanent hiring is consolidating, with nearly one in every two new contracts being permanent, a contrast to the situation before the labor reform. Hospitality and retail lead job creation, followed by administrative services, transport, and construction.
