The leader of the opposition in Lleida, Xavi Palau, has reiterated his firm opposition to the construction of homeless shelters in the Balàfia and Escorxador districts.

The People's Party leader in Lleida has stepped up his criticism of the socialist government's social inclusion model. Palau argues that these facilities are being planned without citizen input and pledged that under his leadership, no such shelters would be built without neighborhood approval.

"With the shelter, there are no half measures: either you are with the neighbors, or you are against them. I am with them."

The conservative party submitted motions as recently as December 31, 2025, to halt the Balàfia project. Palau expressed concerns that mixing homeless services with housing for domestic violence survivors could compromise the safety and privacy of vulnerable women.
