A Lleida resident received a fraudulent email on Wednesday impersonating the Mossos d’Esquadra, warning of an immediate arrest due to alleged cybercrimes and drug possession.

The email, received by a resident of the Segrià capital, pretended to be sent at the request of the Director General of the Police of Catalonia and the Cybercrime Security Agency of Catalonia.
The document warned the recipient that an immediate arrest was pending because they were accused of various cybercrimes, including the “illegal possession of drugs found within their cyberspace”.

The scammers urged the victim to immediately report to a police station or reply directly to the email to avoid police action.

Among the false accusations used to intimidate the user were serious crimes such as child pornography, exhibitionism, commercial sex, or drug trafficking. The ultimate goal of this type of scam is to obtain the victim's personal or banking data through the misuse of authority.
