Around 150 Catalan farmers started a march this Tuesday from Lleida and Girona to Madrid to protest against the Mercosur trade agreement and the CAP.

The protest, organized by the Unió de Pagesos union, includes thirty farmers from Girona and fifty from Lleida. Participants have loaded tractors onto trailers to transport them to the outskirts of Madrid, where they will march towards the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday.

"What they are doing, without any shame, is signing free trade agreements that allow unfair competition. We must put an end to this political hypocrisy."

Meanwhile, the European Parliament has approved a safeguard mechanism to temporarily suspend parts of the Mercosur trade deal if it significantly harms the European agri-food sector. These measures aim to protect sensitive products like beef from import surges.
The demonstration also highlights the upcoming Agricultural Elections on February 27. The union emphasizes the need for strong representation to protect small and medium-sized farming models deeply rooted in the local territory.
