Lleida Pyrenees registers -17.3 ºC in Catalonia's coldest morning since 2021

Frost was widespread across the Lleida plain, with lows down to -7.7 ºC, while Pica d'Estats reached -19.4 ºC.

The Lleida Pyrenees registered temperatures down to -17.3 ºC this Wednesday, making the area the coldest spot in Spain during the current cold wave, according to AEMET data.

The coldest point was located at Cap de Baquèira, at the 2,492-meter level, where thermometers dropped to -17.3 degrees. This figure surpassed the -15.6 degrees recorded in Sierra Nevada, Granada. Other Pyrenean stations also reported extreme values, such as -16.4 degrees at Port Ainé.

Overall in Catalonia, this has been the coldest morning since January 6, 2021.

The low temperatures were not limited to the peaks. Towns in the Lleida plain also suffered widespread frost. The automatic station network of Meteocat (Catalan Meteorological Service) reported -7.7 degrees in Raimat, -4.6 degrees in the city of Lleida, and -7.1 degrees in Anglesola.
Furthermore, the summit of Pica d’Estats, the highest point in Catalonia at 3,143 meters, recorded a minimum of -19.4 degrees at midnight. Regarding populated areas, notable lows included -14.1 degrees in Boí, -11.3 degrees in El Pont de Suert and Vielha, and -9.1 degrees in La Seu d’Urgell.
Although temperatures are expected to recover gradually throughout the day, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) maintains the alert for snow and wind in the Pyrenees area.
