Students from several Lleida institutes shared their experiences yesterday at the Sala Alfred Perenya regarding their trip last May to the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps, promoted by Memòria Democràtica.

The Sala Alfred Perenya in Lleida hosted the initiative De Lleida a Mauthausen 2025, where students participating in the Buchenwald-Mauthausen project shared their experiences from their trip to the Nazi concentration camps of Mauthausen and Gusen. The visit took place last May, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the camps' liberation.
The activity provided a firsthand account from students of institutions including La Caparrella, Guindàvols, Josep Lladonosa, Manuel de Montsuar, Màrius Torres, Col·legi El Carme, Institut d'Almenar, and IE Oliana. The project is driven by Memòria Democràtica of the Lleida City Council, in collaboration with Amical de Mauthausen and the DEMD Working Group of the Department of Education.
The main objective of this educational effort is to keep the historical memory of the deportees alive and transmit their legacy and lessons to the new generations, ensuring the events are not forgotten.
In parallel, the Paeria (City Council) will commemorate the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust and Prevention of Crimes against Humanity tomorrow with a solemn ceremony in front of the FITA sculpture in Cappont. New Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) will be presented during this event, scheduled to be placed in the city on April 18.
Furthermore, nearly 800 students from the Lleida region will participate on Monday in a major event at the Teatre de la Llotja. Educational centers will present their work on deportees from Lleida, and a commemorative mural, created by the artist Miquel Wert, will be inaugurated under the Príncep de Viana bridge. The event is expected to be attended by the Minister of Justice, Ramon Espadaler, and the MEP Jaume Asens.
