The police investigation began following the arrest of a couple, a man aged 39 and a woman aged 37, who specifically targeted vulnerable victims. These thieves routinely traveled from the metropolitan region of Barcelona to municipalities in the Lleida demarcation.
The modus operandi, dubbed Mimosa, relies on deception and physical proximity. The woman approaches the victim, generally an elderly person, under any pretext to gain their confidence.
Once contact is established, the thief takes advantage by hugging or pouncing on the victim to quickly steal valuables they are carrying, such as jewelry, watches, or wallets. Meanwhile, the driver waits nearby to ensure an immediate escape.
The couple's arrest on Monday, January 12, was made possible thanks to the intervention of an off-duty Mossos d’Esquadra agent. This action allowed for the recovery of various pieces of jewelry, and the police maintain an open investigation to determine their origin and whether the arrested individuals are involved in other robberies in the area.
