The Lloret de Mar City Council, located in La Selva, approved yesterday a new beach regulation extending the smoking ban to terraces and water pipes, in addition to limiting sunbed space.

The new Regulation for the Management of Services and Activities on Beaches, approved in the plenary session, extends the smoking restriction that had been applied to the sand since January 2024. The measure now includes adjacent terraces and the prohibition of smoking water pipes (shisha).
The inclusion of the tobacco smoking ban on terraces was driven by several opposition groups, including Lloret en Comú, ERC, Tots per Lloret, and Junts, who pointed out the inconsistency of allowing smoking just centimeters away from the prohibited area.

"If smoking is prohibited on the entire beach, it would make no sense that 50 centimeters away, depending on whether you are sitting in the terrace chair or on the sand, you could smoke."

The Councillor for Security, Mobility, and Public Roads, Cristina Aymerich, defended the measure in the field of public health, emphasizing that Lloret de Mar has been a pioneer in these restrictions. The regulation also incorporates limiting the space allocated for sunbeds and hammocks to prevent overcrowding and restricting alcohol sales advertising on catamarans.
