The Lloret de Mar City Council has reached an agreement with the owners of the Can Juncadella estate to reopen the coastal path, which has been inaccessible for 17 years due to fences surrounding a mansion owned by a Kazakh magnate.

After years of demands and legal disputes, the section of the coastal path at Can Juncadella, connecting Canyelles beach with Morisca cove towards Tossa de Mar, will once again be accessible to the public. This passage had been blocked since 2009 by the property's fences, linked to a former president of Kazakhstan.
The agreement, which must be ratified by the municipal plenary, includes redefining the route and carrying out the necessary works for its opening. This accord will allow compliance with up to six rulings from the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) that demanded the path's reopening.

"This agreement should allow residents and visitors to realize this historic demand to walk and enjoy this coastal path, respectful of the environment and which will be part of our heritage."

Adrià Lamelas · Mayor of Lloret de Mar
The company Flinder Data, owned by the magnate, will bear the full cost of both the planning and the execution of the works for the new itinerary. Although the route will not be identical to the original, it has been designed to be as close to the sea as possible, offering previously inaccessible views and connecting with the GR-92.
The environmental platform SOS Costa Brava has expressed its dissatisfaction with the agreement, recalling a previous agreement that the property failed to honor. Its president, Jordi Palaudelmàs, has voiced concern that the path remains closed while the new route is not executed, and has requested that the old path be opened provisionally.
The Can Juncadella estate, owned since 2007 by former Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev and his family, is a luxury mansion spanning 3,000 square meters with 16 bedrooms and twenty bathrooms. The property has been known for the presence of armed guards, dangerous dogs, and a helipad.
