The Department of Health has initiated a restructuring of emergency medical transport, framed within the SEM's new service contract, which involves moving the basic ambulance that has been stationed in Breda for years to Hostalric starting this April. This decision has been labeled unilateral by the Breda Town Council, which has expressed its deep indignation.
The municipal plenary session has unanimously approved a motion criticizing the loss of the ambulance's physical presence, deeming it detrimental to the speed of response in emergency situations. The council argues that the current model relies exclusively on technical and statistical criteria, ignoring local knowledge and the proximity of essential services.
“"Ambulances are not assigned to a single municipality, but are placed at the point that allows for the most efficient coverage of the entire territory."
From the SEM, a message of reassurance has been conveyed to the population, justifying the decision with activity data. According to the data, the Breda ambulance performed approximately 310 services within the municipality over the last year, while the majority of the nearly 1,200 total services were provided outside the municipal area. Therefore, the relocation to Hostalric is considered an optimization of resources for more efficient coverage of the Girona Health Region.
The municipal motion calls on the Department of Health to reverse the service loss or to implement effective support measures to mitigate its impact. The Town Council has warned that it will continue to defend the municipality's interests and does not rule out further institutional actions.
