Officer Daniel, a 36-year-old Mosso d'Esquadra, saved the life of 5-year-old Ares by performing the Heimlich maneuver in a restaurant in Solsona last Sunday, January 11.

The swift intervention by the officer, a resident of Badalona stationed in Solsona, was crucial in preventing a tragedy. Daniel received the alert at 14:21 h, and his patrol arrived at the restaurant La Cabana d'en Geli in under a minute, finding the child unconscious.

"I became an officer to be able to save lives. Saving a life, especially a child's, justifies all efforts to be a police officer."

The boy, Ares, and his family, residents of Vilanova i la Geltrú, were having lunch after a day of snow activities at Port del Comte when the minor choked on a french fry. His father, Francisco, attempted to help him unsuccessfully before calling 112.
When the mother handed the unconscious child to Daniel, he immediately began the Heimlich maneuver. After two failed attempts, on the third thrust, the boy reacted and began breathing and responding to questions, just before the arrival of the SEM ambulance.

"We are tremendously grateful for the speed and professionalism with which the emergency services acted."

This experience has prompted the officer to request expanded training in rescue and first aid. Asphyxiation by choking is the third leading cause of non-natural death in Spain, with over 2,000 annual victims, underscoring the importance of knowing techniques like the Heimlich or CPR.
