The Official College of Nurses and Midwives of Tarragona (CODITA) has denounced a severe shortage of midwives in the Tarragona and Ebro regions, warning of a potential functional collapse without adequate generational replacement.

Currently, there are only 116 midwives active in the demarcation, a number that the organization considers clearly insufficient to meet the population's needs. This situation will be exacerbated by anticipated retirements.
According to CODITA's projections, a total of 36 midwives will retire by 2040. Most of these retirements will occur between 2029 and 2036, with an

especially critical

peak expected in 2033. Given this outlook, the professional college demands

adequate planning

to ensure the necessary staffing of midwives and secure generational replacement.
As part of International Midwives' Day, CODITA organized a professional conference in Valls. During the event, crucial topics such as complex births, perinatal health and postpartum trauma, youth sexual health, female genital mutilation, and a workshop on body awareness were addressed, among others.
The college also highlighted that, according to its data, between 20% and 40% of women experience childbirth as a traumatic event, underscoring the importance of professional support and care in this process.
