The Catalan government has activated the VENTCAT emergency plan this Wednesday and Thursday as wind gusts over 80 km/h are expected to hit Tarragona and Barcelona before spreading statewide.

The Civil Protection agency has warned that the strongest gusts will occur starting midnight on Wednesday, February 11th. While the southern regions of Tarragona and the Barcelona coastline are the first to be affected, the weather system is predicted to cover almost all of Catalonia by Thursday, including the Pyrenees.
Firefighters have already responded to 217 emergency calls between midnight and 9:00 AM today. Most incidents involved fallen trees or unstable urban structures, particularly in the North Emergency Region and Tarragona. The 112 emergency number has handled over 320 calls, with the highest volume coming from Terrassa and Barcelona.

Authorities urge citizens to be extremely careful during outdoor Carnival events scheduled for this week.

In addition to the wind, a maritime alert is in place for the central and northern coasts, where waves could reach 2.5 meters. Residents are advised to secure loose items on balconies and avoid wooded areas. A sharp drop in temperatures and potential snowfall in higher altitudes are expected to follow over the weekend.
