The Tarragona Amphitheatre has become the world's first Roman site to incorporate a mixed reality experience, 'El Clam de Tàrraco', to bring its heritage closer to visitors.

The city of Tarragona has unveiled a pioneering initiative allowing visitors to the Amphitheatre to relive a day in the Roman era using cutting-edge technology. The experience, named 'El Clam de Tàrraco', employs mixed reality glasses to offer an immersive journey.
This new experience, driven by WeRiseUp, a joint venture between PortAventura World and Vekoma, combines direct observation of the space with digital recreations. Participants, following the story of a young gladiator aspirant, can discover what the grand games were like in the capital of Hispania Citerior and virtually witness scenes from Roman spectacles.
The installation is temporary and reversible, adhering to regulations for UNESCO World Heritage sites, and requires no permanent physical intervention at the Amphitheatre. The experience lasts approximately 12 minutes and costs 7 euros, in addition to the regular monument entrance fee, with the site being around 2,000 years old.
The Mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, highlighted that this technology allows for "explaining history with new languages" and reaching new audiences, advocating for adaptation to new technologies to make heritage more accessible.
Meanwhile, the CEO of WeRiseUp, Andreu Tobella, stated that 'El Clam de Tàrraco' represents "a new way of bringing heritage closer to people", positioning the Tarragona Amphitheatre as a starting point for novel immersive cultural experiences.
