According to data from the business sector, the current infrastructure is insufficient to meet the target set by the European Commission, which aims for 30% of freight transport to be carried by rail by 2030. The current lack of capacity is considered one of the main bottlenecks of the Mediterranean Corridor.
The organization has estimated that nearly 7 billion euros in priority investments are needed in Catalonia to improve logistics efficiency. Among the proposals is the recovery of the Reus-Roda line as an alternative for freight traffic, thus avoiding saturation of the coastal route.
Daily traffic volume on the section between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Tarragona is particularly high, with circulation equivalent to about 11,500 trucks per day. In addition to duplicating this sector, there are also calls for a segregated Rodalies line between Martorell and Sant Celoni.
