Around one hundred International Paper employees demonstrated this Thursday, February 26, at Plaça Imperial Tarraco in Tarragona to protest against the planned closure of their factories.

The mobilization occurred while union leaders met with management at a nearby hotel. Workers from the Valls and Montblanc sites have been on an indefinite strike since last Tuesday, claiming that the company's justification for the shutdown is insufficient and lacks proper documentation.

"There are many deficiencies in the information provided to justify the closure."

Unions state that there are four purchase offers for the plants, including one from the Cristian Lay group. However, they accuse the company of preferring closure to eliminate competition. The Ministry of Industry is set to meet with executives to discuss these potential sales, which could save 174 jobs currently at risk starting March 19.
