The Civil Guard in Tarragona is investigating two individuals for alleged crimes against Historical Heritage after detecting the illegal sale of ancient coins on digital platforms this February.

The operation was carried out by the SEPRONA unit from Tortosa, which began the investigation after detecting online offers for numismatic pieces of suspicious origin. Months of cyber-patrolling allowed agents from the Civil Guard to identify the sellers and reconstruct how these relics were being traded outside legal channels in Tarragona.
The seized items include highly significant historical relics: a gold dinar minted during the Caliphate, a Roman denarius from the era of Emperor Vitellius, and a silver real from the reign of Philip V. These coins were analyzed by the Generalitat de Catalunya heritage services.

The extraction and commercialization of archaeological goods without authorization is a serious offense that deprives society of its common heritage.

A technical report issued on February 3 confirmed the authenticity and heritage value of the pieces. Consequently, the case has been referred to the Duty Court of Amposta and the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Tarragona to oversee the investigation into the plunder.
