CatSalut has confirmed that Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona will implement weekend thrombectomy services during 2026, achieving 12 hours of daily care, seven days a week.

This improvement marks a significant shift from the current model, where the stroke treatment procedure is only available from Monday to Friday. Under the new plan, the service will operate from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily, reducing the need to transfer patients to Barcelona during weekends.

"It is not a matter of resources, it is about professionals, and we want and need the leadership of the professionals in the territory."

Pilar Otermin · Deputy Director of the Catalan Health Service
The announcement followed a meeting between Catalan Health Service officials and the Mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales. In addition to the extended hours, the Department of Health has pledged more beds and resources for the stroke unit at the hospital.
