Heatwaves and persistent drought have forced winemakers in the DO Tarragona appellation to commence their harvest exceptionally early. In the Camp de Tarragona plain and the Ribera d’Ebre region, some wineries began picking the first week of August, two weeks ahead of the usual schedule. Water scarcity since June has prevented grape berries from swelling properly, leading to a decrease in production volume.
Despite adverse climatic conditions, producers anticipate a healthy and high-quality harvest, with an estimated yield similar to last year's 2.2 million kilograms. The vineyards remain healthy due to low hydration, which has prevented fungal diseases. Maria Rosa Blanch, president of DO Tarragona, notes that the main difference will be in the grape's alcohol content, which may be slightly lower in the Camp de Tarragona compared to the Ribera d’Ebre.
The early harvest has presented organizational challenges, particularly in securing labor. Urgency and stress are significant factors for winemakers this season. Furthermore, a global decline in wine consumption and existing stock from the previous year threaten to lower prices, creating market imbalance.
DO Tarragona, comprising 26 mostly small wineries with limited production, relies on local and Catalan markets, with a significant presence on the Costa Daurada. Blanch emphasizes the value of local wines and the consolidation of the region's winemaking tradition, celebrating its 80th anniversary. The importance of promoting international market access, with adequate administrative support for smaller wineries, is also highlighted.
