The Port of Tarragona has commenced sand replenishment operations at La Pineda beach, an undertaking that will involve 100,000 cubic meters of sand and is expected to last approximately 15 days, preparing the area for the tourist season.

This initiative, which began on Friday, April 17, is part of a two-year contract with a budget of 2.8 million euros (VAT included), which started in 2025. The sand is being extracted from a submarine bank located south of the Racó de la Pineda breakwater.
The sand replenishment serves as a temporary environmental compensatory measure, necessitated by the extension of the Llevant dike. The future construction of the Ponent counter-dike is expected to provide definitive stabilization for the beach, thereby eliminating the need for further sand contributions.
Preparations for these works began the previous week with the installation of pipelines required for sediment transport. On Wednesday, April 15, the dredge Idun R arrived at the port facility to carry out the material extraction. This vessel, owned by Rohde Nielsen, the company awarded the contract for 2025 and 2026, is a trailing suction dredge with a reduced draft of 4 meters, capable of discharging sand via a bottom door or by pumping it through a pipeline.
The dredge Idun R operates within an authorized area of 21 hectares. Sediments are transported to the beach via the pipeline and, once there, are distributed by ground machinery. It is estimated that the dredging and sand relocation tasks will conclude in about 15 days, ensuring the beach is in optimal condition for the start of the tourist season.
