An episode of torrential rain, accompanied by considerable hail and strong gusts of wind, has affected several counties in Tarragona this Monday afternoon. The storm, which moved from west to east, created a dense curtain of water that reduced visibility to a few meters and caused water and hail accumulation on the roads.
The storm's passage left streets and roads covered in water and hail, forming numerous streams that hindered traffic. The wind uprooted leaves and branches from trees, and traffic disruptions were reported due to flooding and fallen trees.
This weather situation had been anticipated, with Protecció Civil activating the INUNCAT plan. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia had warned of the risk of exceeding 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes in inland areas and the Terres de l'Ebre.
This episode follows a weekend marked by heavy rains in the northern coastal areas of the province, which caused flooding in municipalities such as Roda de Berà, Creixell, and El Vendrell.
The mayor of El Vendrell, Kenneth Martínez, highlighted the need to rethink infrastructure and urban planning in light of the recurrence of these episodes, noting that many urbanized areas are located on flood-prone land.
The storm eventually moved towards the sea, leaving behind wet streets and vegetation debris carried by the wind. The full extent of the damage caused by this new episode is still unknown.
