Facing daily life with neurodivergent children or as a single mother can be a challenge, not only due to family dynamics but also the perception of the environment. This reality has motivated two mothers from L'Espluga de Francolí to create a project that promotes awareness and normalization of diversity among young children, using stories as their primary tool.
The project, which has been taking shape over time, has seen the publication of six books this year. The first two are particularly significant, as they are inspired by the creators' personal experiences, but focus on their children. These initial stories are designed for early childhood education, with highly visual illustrations and minimal text, facilitating understanding through drawing. The goal is for children to grow up with respect for diversity, an understanding that, according to the promoters, they have often found lacking.
One of the stories narrates the experience of one of the mothers' young daughters, who is autistic, showing how she reacts to everyday situations. For example, it illustrates different ways of playing in a park or individual reactions to rain, with the intention that children can identify and understand the variety of behaviors. Another story focuses on a single-parent family, exploring how a child discovers that there are different types of families and that love defines them, regardless of their composition.
In addition to these, a third story about bullying, often linked to difference, has been published. Recently, in April, three more titles have been added, aimed at older children: one about a child in the hospital, another about sensitivity and love, and one about Sant Jordi and a small dragon of emotions. The creators plan to continue expanding the project with new stories.
The project's initiators advocate for the importance of openly discussing these topics, especially in schools. They have already visited one class and intend to continue this outreach effort to foster dialogue and understanding within the educational sphere.
