The Tarragona Metropolitan Area is intensifying its efforts to strengthen its structure, finalizing an agreement with Universitat Rovira i Virgili and holding talks with chambers of commerce and regional councils of Tarragonès, Alt Camp, and Baix Camp.

This 'muscle-building' process of the territorial association, which recently completed five months of existence, seeks to integrate fundamental actors for the region's development. The agreement with the URV could be signed after Easter, while negotiations with the chambers of Tarragona, Reus, and Valls, as well as with the regional councils, are progressing to establish a framework for collaboration.

"They will provide knowledge, capacity for economic revitalization, and a territorial vision."

Roc Muñoz · President of the Association for the Metropolitan Impulse of Camp de Tarragona
Roc Muñoz, president of the Association for the Metropolitan Impulse of Camp de Tarragona, has positively assessed these advancements, highlighting that the incorporation of the university, economic agents, and regional bodies represents a 'qualitative leap' for the metropolitan project. According to Muñoz, these actors are 'key' to providing knowledge, economic dynamism, and a cohesive territorial vision.
The URV, with an educational community of 16,590 students in the 2024/25 academic year, is emerging as one of the most significant additions. Juan Antonio Duro, Vice-Rector for Economy, Infrastructure and Institutional Relations at the URV, has confirmed that the signing of the adhesion is 'imminent' and that the university will act as a 'partner' to transfer knowledge.

"We will be 'partners' to provide knowledge transfer."

The areas of collaboration with the URV will include territorial and urban planning, strategic infrastructures, ecological transition, resource management, economic and social development, territorial cohesion, and metropolitan governance. The university will actively participate in the seven sectoral committees of the Metropolitan Area, with a special focus on innovation, research, and social cohesion.
In addition to the URV, the Metropolitan Area has held meetings with the chambers of commerce of Tarragona, Reus, and Valls to explain the project. The chambers have expressed their intention to evaluate the proposal and participate in the sectoral committees to promote the metropolitan territory. As for the regional councils, their collaboration will focus on promoting shared initiatives for promotion, innovation, and investment attraction.
These new adhesions join the seven founding municipalities (Tarragona, Reus, Cambrils, Salou, Valls, Constantí, and La Canonja) and entities such as Pimec, the Port of Tarragona, and the Tic Cluster. Recently, municipalities such as Altafulla, Vallmoll, El Catllar, Els Pallaresos, and La Pobla de Mafumet have also approved their incorporation, with the goal of reaching 30 municipalities by 2027 to consolidate the Metropolitan Area as a key agent for the future of Camp de Tarragona.
