The Mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, met with Servei Català de la Salut officials to finalize the expansion of stroke medical operations at Joan XXIII Hospital.

The meeting established a roadmap for the hospital to provide 24-hour thrombectomy services. Currently, the unit only operates Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The Generalitat de Catalunya expects to extend this service to Saturdays and Sundays before the end of the year.

"The shared goal is to guarantee full 24/7 service."

Pilar Otermin, deputy director of CatSalut, stated that the delay in full implementation is due to a shortage of specialized professionals in the region rather than budget issues. The strategy involves certifying local doctors to reduce reliance on Barcelona-based teams, alongside increasing hospital beds and resources.
Local leaders from nearby towns, including Reus and Montblanc, have voiced their support for the initiative, citing the need for territorial equity in healthcare. This development comes just days before a planned protest at the Balcó del Mediterrani to demand full-time service.
