The Guàrdia Urbana de Tarragona has begun using two Taser devices since this Friday, assigned to the command staff of the Reinforcement and Proximity Unit for high-risk interventions.

The devices have been activated within the Police Reinforcement and Proximity Unit (UPRP) as part of the operational equipment update. A key element is that the use of these devices will always be linked to the automatic activation of body cameras, ensuring the traceability of interventions and police transparency.

"a step forward in the protection of all persons involved in a police intervention"

The authorized officers for carrying and using the Taser have completed a specific training program provided by the Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya (ISPC). Furthermore, its use is strictly regulated by an internal protocol based on criteria of proportionality, necessity, and subsequent supervision.
This addition provides the Tarragona police force with an intermediate tool between the traditional police baton and the firearm, aiming to minimize the use of more harmful means in complex situations. The Chief Intendant of the Guàrdia Urbana, Manel Vázquez, stressed that these devices can be decisive in high-risk interventions. Other police forces such as the Mossos d'Esquadra and local police in nearby municipalities like Torredembarra, El Vendrell, or Cunit already possess these devices.
