The municipal company Ematsa has launched a tender in Tarragona to hire private security escorts to accompany workers during water supply cuts and fraudulent connection removals this February.

The Empresa Municipal Mixta d'Aigües de Tarragona (Ematsa) has decided to reinforce security to ensure the safety of its employees. This measure follows increasing tension with some users during public interventions, particularly regarding supply suspensions due to non-payment or the removal of illegal connections.
The new contract has a base budget of 56,573.79 euros and a duration of two years. For the first time, in addition to street accompaniment, the service includes static surveillance at the public service offices in La Muntanyeta, located in the Sant Pere i Sant Pau neighborhood, where conflict has risen.

"Se considera necesario contar con estos servicios como medida preventiva para velar y garantizar la seguridad del personal"

Surveillance tasks will begin at 8:00 AM, with an estimated five hours of daily service. Two escorts will accompany workers in high-risk situations. Although Ematsa states no physical assaults have been recorded recently, they emphasize the need for prevention in coordination with the Department of Interior.
To address energy poverty, Ematsa highlights its Social Fund of 150,000 euros, managed alongside the Municipal Institute of Social Services of Tarragona. This fund provides tariff discounts and guarantees water access for vulnerable citizens, aiming to prevent social exclusion and reduce potential conflicts.
