The Viking Yi Dun, operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, is making a two-day call in Tarragona on August 3rd and 4th. This ship signifies the company's first venture into Mediterranean itineraries tailored entirely for the Chinese market, reinforcing the cruise line's commitment to the city.
This year, Viking Ocean Cruises has scheduled a total of 17 calls in Tarragona, expecting approximately 34,800 passengers. These figures solidify the port's position as a key destination for high-end cruises and bolster Tarragona Cruise Port's strategy to target this segment.
The inaugural call featured an institutional event attended by local authorities, representatives from China, and the company's management. The occasion highlighted Tarragona's role as a meeting point between Catalonia and China.
The president of Port Tarragona, Santiago J. Castellà, emphasized that the call "marks a milestone that transcends the arrival of a new cruise ship" and enhances the city's international standing. Meanwhile, Head of Business Development, Genoveva Climent, mentioned ongoing explorations for "long-term collaboration opportunities" with the company.
As part of the welcome, a human tower performance by the Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls was held, offering cruise passengers an immersion into Catalan culture. This initiative aligns with the port's focus on cruise tourism centered on heritage, authenticity, and destination connection.
The 2026 season anticipates 81 calls in Tarragona, with 45 of them being high-end cruises, representing a 40.6% increase from the previous year. Six of Viking's 17 calls include overnight stays, allowing passengers to explore the region's attractions.
