This new therapeutic alternative, driven by the Urology Department, represents a significant advancement in patient care for bladder tumors. The technique involves the precise elimination of damaged tissue through the application of laser energy, offering a treatment considered "safe, effective, and much less aggressive" than conventional surgery, according to hospital sources. This reduction in therapeutic aggressiveness minimizes the physical and emotional impact on patients.
Bladder tumors are lesions in the urinary bladder that, especially in low-grade cases, can exhibit less aggressive behavior but carry a high risk of recurrence (relapse). Until now, many of these relapses required conventional surgical interventions, with the consequent hospital admissions and longer recovery periods.
With the new program, it is anticipated that around forty selected cases annually will benefit from this technology. The treatment is performed directly in the Urology clinic using flexible cystoscopy, local intravesical anesthesia, and a thulium fiber laser (TFL). This fine fiber allows precise energy application directly onto the lesion.
“"The new program allows us to offer a safe, effective, and much less aggressive treatment for selected patients, reducing the physical and emotional impact that conventional surgery can entail."
The Urology Department has established a specific protocol with strict clinical criteria for patient selection and defines the entire care pathway, from preparation to follow-up. This ensures that the technique is applied exclusively in indicated cases and with the highest safety guarantees.
