One of the main recommendations from the professionals of the Comprehensive Care Program for People with Advanced Illnesses, run by the Fundació la Caixa, is to plan the holidays in advance. They suggest holding a prior family meeting to manage expectations and reduce tensions.
In this regard, they highlight the importance of giving a voice to all family members, including children and the elderly, who are often excluded with the intention of protecting them during these difficult times in Tarragona.
Another key point is adapting or transforming Christmas traditions closely linked to the absent person. Rethinking customs and creating new remembrance rituals allows the absence to be honored more consciously and alleviates the emotional burden during December.
Psychologists also stress the need to set aside time for rest, as the holidays are often filled with social and family commitments. Finally, the most repeated message is allowing oneself to feel without judgment, accepting that grief involves contradictory emotions such as sadness, nostalgia, or even joy.
