The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, requested responsibility from farmers mobilized against the Mercosur agreement on January 9 in Lleida, urging them not to compromise feed supply to the livestock sector by blocking the Port of Tarragona.

The Minister stressed that, while respecting the right to protest, it is crucial to find a balance that allows demonstrations without impeding the passage of strategic or dangerous goods, especially the feed required for farms. This request comes just hours before the meeting he is scheduled to hold with representatives of the agricultural sector.

"We must find a way that allows the protest and at the same time guarantees the passage of certain dangerous or strategic goods."

From Lleida, where he reviewed the past year, Ordeig described 2025 as a “complicated year” for the sector, marked by drought, floods, and various health crises such as nodular dermatosis, ASF, and avian flu. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the sector's export figures have been “far above the European and Spanish average.”
Regarding European policy, the Minister supported sending Brussels “the appropriate message” regarding the Catalan position on the Mercosur treaty. Finally, he insisted on the need to increase investments in irrigation, technology, and access to place the sector “where it belongs.”
