More than 5,000 teachers marched through Tarragona this Wednesday, February 11, to demand more resources and less bureaucracy in the public education system following a massive strike turnout.

The protest started at Imperial Tarraco Square and moved along Rambla Nova to the Balcó del Mediterrani. Protesters blocked traffic on the city's main roads to voice their opposition to Education Minister Esther Niubó.

"The strike has had a brutal follow-up and we think it is a turning point."

Unions such as USTEC and CGT described the day as historic. They are demanding an investment of 6% of GDP in education to address heavy workloads and staffing shortages across the Camp de Tarragona region.

"We are overwhelmed, with very high ratios, and the system does not focus on the workers."

The demonstration ended in front of the Government Delegation. Union representatives met with Montserrat Fortuny, director of territorial services, but expressed disappointment over the lack of concrete solutions offered by the administration.
